Anonymous Is Much Bigger and More Powerful Than You Think, According to New Research

Ready to get sort of freaked out? Ok good. What’s up guys, for Complex News I’m Alex Hudgens and I just got slightly more paranoidabout the world we live in. New research is suggesting that Anonymous, the hacktivist collective, is much largerand more powerful than we may think. University of Copenhagen graduate student Yevgeniy Golovchenko’s research shows thatthe group’s “absolute minimal size” is currently 22. 2 million members globally. Golovchenko came to this conclusion by going through over 2,770 different Anonymous-affiliatedFacebook pages. Some people brush Anonymous off as being the world’s largest V for Vendetta fan club, but let’s be real-- they’ve been linked to a few major moments. Just this week, civilians have traced Wednesday’s New York Stock Exchange to Anonymous becauseof a tweet they issued, stating, “Wonder if tomorrow is going to be bad for Wall Street…we can only hope. ”Now, no official claim of responsibility has been released by the hackers.  The Independentreports that The Department of Homeland Security has said that there were “no signs of maliciousactivity at this time”, blaming the outage on a technical glitch. Even if the Stock Exchange incident has nothing to do with Anonymous, Golovchenko’s studyis still interesting.  He notes that his sole intention was to, “show the enormity andconnectivity of the Anonymous movement at a global level. ” If the group is truly aslarge as this research shows, there’s no telling what they have done and can do. Watch your back, everyone.  For all of your pop culture news, keep it locked on Complex.
